<p><i>Kenyapithecus</i> ist ein <a href="Neologismus" title="Neologismus">Neologismus</a>. Die Bezeichnung der Gattung ist abgeleitet vom Fundort in Kenia (<a href="Englische_Sprache" title="Englische Sprache">engl.</a>: Kenya) sowie vom <a href="Griechische_Sprache" title="Griechische Sprache">griechischen</a> Wort πίθηκος (<a href="Altgriechische_Sprache" title="Altgriechische Sprache">altgriechisch</a> ausgesprochen <i>píthēkos</i>: „Affe“). Das <a href="Epitheton#Biologie" title="Epitheton">Epitheton</a> <i>africanus</i> verweist auf den Fundort in <a href="Afrika" title="Afrika">Afrika</a>. <i>Kenyapithecus africanus</i> bedeutet somit sinngemäß „afrikanischer Affe aus Kenia“.
